Shion, set them free from this cage. Please, I want you to lift the curse that mankind has placed upon them. Please, Shion, save Cecily and Cathe.
—Febronia to Shion Uzuki

Cecilia "Cecily" and Catherine "Cathe" are the younger Realian sisters of Febronia, who appear in Shion Uzuki's visions.

Biography[]

Paradise

An illusion of Febronia watching her sisters in their imaginary paradise.

Cecily and Cathe were manufactured by the order of Sergius XVII according to concrete data taken from Febronia[citation needed]. Like Febronia and Almadel, Cecily and Cathe were transgenic type Realians and were manufactured by Joachim Mizrahi, but in Cecily and Cathe's case, they were tuned and used as the core of a system to control U-DO.

Cecily and Cathe were both connected to the U-DO System in Labyrinthos on Old Miltia. Built by a group that included the likes of Joachim Mizarahi, Kevin Winnicot, and Sellers, the U-DO System was used to keep Cecily and Cathe connected to the Zohar, and in turn, control the activation of the Zohar. With this, not only could the Zohar be controlled, but U-DO would be subdued.

However, the system has not been perfected, as it does not allow full control of the Zohar's activation.[1]

Placed in suspended animation, Cecily and Cathe's amputated bodies were kept alive in transparent pods by life support systems. Their consciousnesses were trapped in an Encephalon environment, where they were made to believe that they were constantly playing near a tree with their older sister.

Cecily and Cathe remained on Miltia in the Abyss after the Miltian Conflict for fourteen years. Due to being Realians, they did not age,[citation needed] leaving them trapped in an eternal cage.

Ye Shall Be As Gods

An illusion of Febronia watching the sisters in their imaginary paradise.

In Episode I, they were originally portrayed during the KOS-MOS Encephalon dive as young children playing around a tree near Febronia's church. Febronia clearly mentioned that this concept of Cecily and Cathe was an illusion — a "binding spell created by mankind to control the Zohar."

Febronia ordered Shion to release Cecily and Cathe's consciousness from the dual bonds of humanity and U-DO, and that they should go to Old Miltia.

When Shion's party enters the ruins of Labyrinthos, they find Cecily and Cathe. Jr. tells MOMO to stay back, and Shion emotionally breaks down. KOS-MOS notes that because they are fused with the system, they have lost their individuality and consciousness, and separating from the system would kill them. Horrified, Jr. curses U-TIC and rhetorically asks why they would do this.

Sergius XVII (whom Jin recognizes as the leader of the Immigrant Fleet) appears and explains that their condition is because using them in their natural state was difficult; their consciousness had to be isolated from the outside world. The Zohar originally belonged to Ormus, and as its guardians, they were entitled to use it. God's mission to them, he continues, was to guide all life forward "to a higher plane of existence" by Ormus and the Zohar.

Jr. is disgusted by this answer, and Shion stands up and objects to Sergius XVII's reasoning. Sergius XVII then tries to justify their condition as part of them being "tools created specifically for that purpose". Shion, enraged, tells Sergius XVII to shut up, and that she refuses to accept his reasons. The rebuffed Sergius activates the U-DO system, stating that he will make them accept it.

Shion hears Febronia's request to kill her sisters.

Jr. recognizes U-DO's voice, and demands that Sergius XVII stop the system, warning that U-DO will wake up again. As KOS-MOS moves to kill Cecily and Cathe to cut the bypass to the Zohar, Shion moves in front of her gun and pleads for her to stop. A vision of Febronia then appears behind Shion, telling her to "[s]et her sisters free." Horrifed, Shion finally realizes the true meaning of Febronia's plea: to "free" her sisters by killing them, freeing them from their fate.

Shion reluctantly removes herself from in front of KOS-MOS and tells her to fire. As KOS-MOS shoots, Shion weeps as Cecily and Cathe are killed.
