Rest in peace, agents of evil. May all of you turn to dust.

Billy Lee Black (ビリー・リー・ブラック, birī rī burakko), originally known as Billy Lee Blanche, is a playable character in Xenogears. He is introduced as a young, pacifistic priest of the Ethos, who runs his own unaffiliated orphanage in the Aquvy region. As an Etone, Billy is charged to protect the world from the Wels.

Billy has a strained relationship with his father Jesiah, but puts up with him for the sake of his little sister, Primera.

Biography[]

Billy was born in Solaris to Jesiah and Racquel Blanche in the year 9983. In Solaris, Sigurd Harcourt needed time to recuperate from Drive addiction under Racquel's care, and stayed at the Blanche's house. This is when Billy met Sigurd, who he would call "Siggy".

When Billy was seven years old, he escaped Solaris with both parents and moved to the Aquvy area. Here, he learned how to use a gun from his father, who began to go by the name Jessie.

When Billy was nine, his sister Primera was born. A year later, his father suddenly disappeared, for reasons unknown to Billy. This would turn out to be as planned, as Jessie had joined Gaspar's troops to defend Shevat against Solaris and Gebler, and did not want his children to be interrogated due to his involvement.[1]

Two years later, when Billy was twelve, Wels attacked Billy's home. Racquel hid her two children behind a grandfather clock, intent on driving the Wels back with her firearm. Unfortunately, Racquel was unable to stop them, and was killed in the attack.

Billy tells Bart how he almost became a prostitute.

In the aftermath, Billy was left with a sense of powerlessness, and Primera became mute. Their life was hard as Billy tried to provide for he and his sister, to the point that he nearly offered his body for money.[2] Bishop Issac Stone soon came to their rescue, convincing Billy to entrust Primera to a Church facility instead, so that Billy could study to become an Etone at the Ethos monastery.

Jessie returned when Billy was fourteen. However, he was a different man both physically and mentally, having become a cocky and irreverent drunk than the father Billy remembered. Billy was ashamed of his father, and even hated to be compared with him, pondering if the man was an imposter. Primera, however, had accepted the man as her father, so Billy put up with his visits.

Becoming an official Etone, Billy opened an orphanage at his childhood home, welcoming in orphans from all over the world. As it was unaffiliated with the Ethos Church, the orphanage was funded by Billy's own meager wages. The orphans in his care liked to play hide-and-seek with Billy, and were a great support for his missions, as they could send the Renmazuo Gear immediately at Billy's signal.

StoneKillsVerlaine

Isaac Stone kills Verlaine in front of Billy.

Billy first appears on the Thames to help treat the Fei Fong Wong's injuries. He then tags along with the group as they deal with a Wel.

Later, when the Ethos headquarters is attacked, Fei and the party investigate deeper into the headquarters and find evidence of its ties to Solaris, and how Solaris uses the Ethos organization to gain supplies, slaves, and intel from the surface, as well as manipulate global affairs. The party also finds out the organization's plot to break away from Solaris, in order to pursue their own plans of world domination.

As Billy struggles with this, Verlaine reveals himself, stating that Billy has been 'defiled' in falling away from Ethos, and that Verlaine himself will cleanse him with death. Jessie enters and stops Verlaine with a stun bullet.

Jessie reveals that the attack is actually a 'purge', by order of Bishop Stone, in order to kill any Ethos members that are not affiliated with Solaris. Verlaine adds to this, revealing the extent of the crimes the members have done, as well as his duty to assassinate them. He also implies these were the sorts of duties Billy would have been tasked with in the future, had he stayed on his previous path. Before Verlaine is able to explain further, he is killed by Stone and two assassins.

After Billy learns the truth about the Ethos and the reasons for his father's actions, he regains his respect for his father.

Later, Jessie has Billy use the JessieCannon, a technique that transforms Jessie's Gear into a weapon that fires the pilot's cockpit as its bullet.

Billy tags along with the main group to defeat System Deus. In Merkava, when Myyah Hawwa awakens in Elly, she swipes Billy's gun and uses it to shoot Fei.

Gameplay[]

Billy's fighting style is a mix of the marksmanship he learned from his father Jessie, and the style widely used among the Etones ("to impart justice in the name of God and the Ethos"). Another strong point of Billy is the wide selection of curative spells he has. However, he has a drawback: he doesn't have Ether attacks, unlike Fei or Bart. He wields two revolvers (Handgun); two short rifles of unlimited ammo, each one hidden in a sleeve of his trenchcoat (Ether-gun), and a powerful shotgun that he pulls from his back (Big gun). When using his deathblows, his ammo will be used as well as his elemental deathblows.

The Renmazuo and his Omnigear El-Renmazuo also have two handguns and a gatling gun, along with an Ether machine powered gun in each of its wrists.

Quotes[]

  • "What did you do this time? Fight? Gamble? Go after someone's wife again!?" (to his father)
  • "The pleasure is mine. I've never had a proper chance to speak with to others about their religions. Can we talk later?"
  • "What an impolite fellow. You should learn how to speak a little more politely." (to Bart)
  • "We are father and son in blood only! I have nothing to do with that man..."
  • "...That father of mine... I wish he'd think about my position before acting."
  • "Don't mention it. We may believe in different gods, but none of us can leave people in need."
  • "Surprised there are only children? My sister and I haven't had parents since we were infants... So, I opened an orphanage so kids without anyone wouldn't have to go through what we did. They're all healthy and obedient to the teachings of the 'Ethos'. They're all good kids who even help me with work."
  • "People are people. Nothing more or less. I admit that there are the weak and the powerless. But that's no reason for us to forsake them. We are all the same human beings."

Trivia[]

  • Billy's middle name Lee was derived from the name Ashley, which was the name Raquel had picked before finding out she was expecting a son. Lee remained her nickname for Billy.[2]
  • There is an inconsistency regarding Billy's birthplace. The instruction manual for the game claims Billy was born in Aquvy, while Perfect Works claims Billy was born in Solaris.
