I thought I didn't have a path that I could take laid out before me. But like he said, that's just running away. I must find my own path.

Fei Fong Wong, known in the Japanese version as Wong Fei Fong (ウォン・フェイフォン, won feifon), is the pony-tailed protagonist of Xenogears. He begins the game as a nescient villager of Lahan Village, with no memories of his past.

The secrets hidden deep within his identity, as well as his past, serve as driving forces to that allow him to find liked-minded companions that help him in his journey as he works to break the cycle and understand the truth of his destiny.

Appearance[]

Fei has long dark brown hair, which is tied slick back in a low ponytail with a ribbon. He has two short bangs in the center of his head, and a long single arching bang that hangs down to his neck on front along. He has tan skin and brown eyes.

His main outfit is a white short sleeved shirt with light blue trim, which is fastened in the front with a white knot. Over his midsection is a purple fauld with a gold trim, over which is tied in a lilac pink martial arts belt. He wears dark teal loose pants and forest green sandals strapped together with white ribbon.

In his in-game sprite, his shoes are brown, and the shirt he wears in the animated cutscenes has the small blue bow in the middle of his shirt's neckline.

As a child, his hair is medium length and he wears an off-white shirt and dark pants.

Personality[]

FeiPainting

Fei painting art in his room.

In the beginning of the game in Lahan, Fei seems to be an ordinary young man who cannot recall his past. Having no memory of his life before his arrival at Lahan, he is naive and unaware of the world he lives in.

Fei enjoys teaching martial arts to the children and is adored by the villagers. It is noted in Perfect Works that Fei loves animals.

His hobby is painting, an ability he seems to have inherited from a skilled artist.

One notable aspect of Fei is that he has a strong sense of justice. While at first he attempts to avoid violence, afraid of his powers destroying those he cares for, it's ultimately his growing bonds with others that draws him back, putting his life on the line in battle.

After losing the only home he knows, as well as being exiled by the remaining members of it, Fei deals with depression and even becomes suicidal.

Suffering from frequent periods of memory loss, Fei unknowingly has another personality named Id, a powerful individual who is the product of the trauma he suffered as a child. Deeper still is a third personality of the 'Coward', the original personality that had sealed itself away upon Fei's mother's death over a decade ago, taking with it the positive memories of his childhood.

As the third, 'artificial' personality, Fei is the newest, and the most inexperienced, having only his memories of his time in Lahan[1] and no solid memories from before then, aside from the bits and pieces Id showed him, and his dreams from past reincarnations.

Abel the Contact[]

XenoAbel

Abel, the Contact.

Fei is referred to as the Contact, due to being the current reincarnation of Abel, a young boy who made contact with the Wave Existence through the Zohar in T.C. 4767.

Being the sole survivor of the Eldridge crash that brought sentient life to the planet, Abel's reincarnations appear in notable times in history, such as the nanotechnology scientist Kim in 6055, the painter Lacan in 9475, and finally, Fei in 9981.

Background[]

Fei was born to Khan Wong and Karen Wong in Shevat in 9981 E.C. They took him to the surface, where he led a peaceful early childhood.

FeiTorture

Fei being tortured by Myyah as Karen.

Fourteen years ago, when Fei was around four or five years old, Karen awakened as the next incarnation of Myyah Hawwa, sealing away her original personality. When Myyah suspected Fei of being a new incarnation of the Contact, she conducted traumatic experiments on Fei, taking him to testing labs, injecting probes into his body and bringing in various humans and demi-humans who had a high compatibility with the Anima Relics. She would have them attempt to make psychic contact with Fei as part of "spiritual fusion" to forcefully awaken him, but no one was successful as Fei's powers would kill them all while he helplessly watched.[2]

Fei attempted to tell Khan about Karen's strange behavior, but Khan dismissed it as he was too taken up by his work. This led Fei to create a separate personality to deal with the continual trauma, planting the seeds for Id to later emerge.

Karen's_Sacrifice

Karen's Sacrifice

Karen's sacrifice.

Things came to a head in 9985, when Karen summoned Grahf, who wanted to merge with Fei. Khan attempted to stop him and was heavily wounded. As this happened, Fei looked up at his mother, wanting her to help, but instead found her impassive face. At the sight of this, Fei was unable to contain his powers as the Contact, and released a beam of light that arced back towards him. Just before the beam could hit Fei, Karen's original self resurfaced, and she used her body as a shield, protecting her son from the blast. Managing a final smile down at her son, Karen then collapsed over him, succumbing to her injuries.[3]

IdSmiles

Another side of Fei begins to manifest right after Karen dies.

In order to deal with the guilt and trauma of his mother's death, Fei's personality split into two parts: the 'coward', who turned inward and took the positive memories of his past and burrowed deep into his psyche, and Id, who took the brunt of the pain and guilt of what was left behind. This left the young boy angry at the world, making him easy to mold for Grahf.

Grahf took Fei and trained him to be an assassin for a period of around ten years, always trying to keep one step ahead of Khan, who was tirelessly searching for them.

In 9993, Grahf turned Id loose on Elru, annihilating it, as well as destroying the Solaris army. Kahran Ramsus was severely injured by Id, an event he still had nightmares of years later.

Xenogears FMV - Is that dream or... - 9 25

Khan rescues Fei from Grahf.

In 9996, Khan located Grahf again, and battled him in order to take his son back. However, Grahf passed into the body of Khan, thus forming a relationship very similar to that of Fei and Id. Khan, disguised as Wiseman, dropped off Fei in Lahan Village, with Id was sealed in deep dormancy in Fei's subconscious.

Due to no personality being at the forefront, a third, 'artificial' personality was developed, who had no memory of his life prior to being fifteen years old.

Xenogears[]

FeiL1

Fei horrified by the destruction of Lahan.

Living a pleasant life in Lahan, Fei is awaiting the marriage of his two best friends, Alice and Timothy. One night, while visiting the local doctor, Citan Uzuki, in his nearby mountain home, Fei is shocked to find a group of Gears flying towards Lahan. By the time Fei makes it back, the Gears storm their way through a burning Lahan.

Intending to fight back, Fei finds a mysterious unmanned Gear and, despite Citan's protests, gets aboard. He has some initial success fending off the attackers, but when he sees Timothy fatally shot, something awakens in Fei. The village is destroyed in a blast of bright light, killing many of the attackers and villagers in the process, including Alice.

After the destruction of Lahan Village, a distraught Fei is exiled by the remaining villagers. Fei decides to flee to Aveh alone to avoid possible enemy reinforcements.

Elly_Meets_Fei

Elly Meets Fei

Fei meets Elly in the forest.

In the Blackmoon Forest, Fei meets Elehayym "Elly" Van Houten, a Gebler soldier, who threatens him at gunpoint in Solarian. When he doesn't understand her, she switches to his language instead, telling him to put his hands up. Cautiously, she asks Fei tell him how to get out of the forest, but Fei, being lost himself, is no help.

As Elly stands there, Fei moves towards her, trying to provoke her into shooting him. Elly is bewildered by his behavior and backs away, straight into two monsters. When Elly is knocked down, Fei snaps out of his malaise and goes to her aid, yelling her name.

Fire

Fei and Elly talk over a campfire.

Afterward, the two decide to band together, and properly introduce each other over a campfire. As they rest, Fei has a dream about being lost in the desert as a child, then meeting a woman who looks eerily similar to the soldier he had just met.

The next morning, Elly asks Fei why he felt his life was worthless. Fei explains what happened in Lahan, as well as his part in its destruction. When Fei shifts his blame to the Kislev soldiers, Elly becomes irritated, arguing that Fei needed to take responsibility for piloting Weltall instead of helping villagers escape, since the soldiers were just there for Weltall. Calling him a coward, Elly is silent as Fei has flashbacks to that night, and decides to leave Fei alone.

Being alone in the forest, Elly encounters a Rankar. Fei runs after her, but is only able to best it with assistance from Citan Uzuki, who flies in a self-made aircraft carrying Weltall. Later, the three camp for the night, and in the morning, Fei finds that Elly had left.

As Fei flees with Citan with Weltall, they encounter Grahf in the deserts of Aveh. Weltall is damaged and taken into custody by two Aveh Military Gears. As they compare notes aboard the cruiser, Citan says Weltall is "a top secret experiment model from Kislev", which meant that they needed to contend with both Kislev and Aveh. Fei suspects the battle between Kislev and Gebler in Lahan was set up by Grahf in order to get Fei to climb into Weltall.

Weltall also gets the attention of Bart and his crew aboard the Yggdrasil I, who attack the Aveh cruiser in order to keep Weltall from falling into Shakhan's hands. After Fei and Bart are forced to resolve their differences in an underground cave, he and Citan are drawn into Bart's crew and help him rescue Margie, who is being held captive in Bledavik by Shakhan.

While entering a fighting tournament to provide cover for Bart's party, Fei is matched with Dan, a survivor of Lahan. If Fei chooses to defend against Dan's attacks instead of attacking back, Dan gets irritated and leaves, giving Fei Alice's wedding dress. Fei also fights Wiseman, who seems to know more about him and his past.

As everyone flees with Margie, Fei encounters Elly outside her quarters, who helps them escape. She fully introduces herself as part of Gebler, and that she was the reason the soldiers fought in Lahan. Fei begs Elly to come with them, but she refuses, saying that this is were she belonged, and that next time, when they meet, they'll be enemies.

Fei later meets Elly, now piloting the Vierge. In order to be able to fight Fei, she injects herself with Drive, but is unable to defeat him before the drug wears off.

In order to draw defense forces away from Bledavik in a final bid to oust Shakhan, part of Bart's forces pose as the Kislev military and make a raid on the border with Nisan, making it look like Kislev was intending to invade Aveh, while Fei leads a group of Gears from Bart's crew to go to the Aveh-Kislev border in order to keep Vanderkam and the Kefeinzel at bay.

As Citan suspected, Vanderkam's insistence on using cannon fire over strategy works to the squad's advantage, and they are able to destroy the Kefeinzel's main guns, leaving it to sink. As the crew evacuates the sinking ship, Vanderkaum pilots the Dora as a final attempt to destroy Fei's squad, but is defeated again. As Fei and his squad move away, Grahf arrives in his Gear, offering Vanderkam "the power", which he accepts.

As Fei's group receives word that Bart and the Yggdrasil are in trouble, the Dora reactivates and attacks. General Maitreya orders Fei to gather the wounded and go to assist Bart while he and his unit fend off the Dora to buy them some time. Fei refuses to leave, and helplessly watches the entire unit be slaughtered by the Dora. The trauma causes Id to emerge, and Vanderkam is destroyed.

When Fei comes to, he finds himself imprisoned in Nortune, Kislev in the D-Block. He becomes allies with fellow prisoners such as Hammer and Ricardo "Rico" Banderas.

Fei meets Elly again escorting the Hecht in her Gear, the Vierge. In the Weltall, he intercepts and forces her to dock onto the rooftops of Nortune, where he shows her the city on fire, making her to come to grips with the costs of Solaris's actions. Leaving Elly there, Fei rejoins Rico, in order to deal with Dominia themselves.

After Fei and Rico defeat Dominia, the two struggle to change the Hecht's trajectory, when Elly suddenly joins them, allowing the three to shift it beyond the initial target. When the impact points towards Nortune's residential district, their Gears overheat, forcing Fei and Rico to let go. Elly, however, refuses to let go, redirecting the ship away from the city and nearly sacrificing herself if not for the efforts of a mysterious sinister-looking winged Gear.

In order to escape the Kislev Empire, Fei's group decides to steal the airplane "Goliath" in the Goliath Factory. They do so, however, Fei and Elly are separated from the rest of the party when the Goliath sinks into the sea after being accidentally shot down by Bart's ship, the Yggdrasil.

NeededAtTimes

"Everyone wants to be needed at times."

Finding themselves separated from their group and stranded on a piece of wreckage in the middle of the ocean, Elly and Fei have a heart to heart as they try to find food. Afterwards, they are discovered and rescued by the Thames, a movable floating city ship.

Much later, while infiltrating Solaris, Fei accidentally mistakes a third class worker bee as Timothy, due to their resemblance. The man introduces himself as Samson, a surface dweller who was kidnapped after the Aveh tournament. Unlike the other worker bees, Samson remembers his life before being kidnapped. Samson attempts to help Fei escape, but is killed when attempting to pass an ID scan.

Reuniting with Elly, Fei is shown around Etrenank and brought to her 1st Class Gazel home, a luxurious mansion that is a stark contrast to the small pods the 3rd Class worker bee slaves have. There, they meet Elly's mother, Medena, who is confused at first by his clothing, but accepts Elly's cover story. She urges him to stay for dinner, and leaves to shop.

SlapElly

"I can't believe you still...? How dare you say that in front of your mother...!"

When Erich catches Elly and Fei trying to find information about their friends in his room, he makes a call to the military police, pulls out a gun from his desk, and points it at Fei. Elly protests, even going as far as to protectively step in front of Fei and declaring herself to be a traitor.

As Erich and Elly's argument heats up, Elly says that Erich was less concerned about her safety and more concerned about people seeing her, because she was "half a land dweller". Medena, who was back from shopping and standing in the doorway, gasps, and Erich slaps Elly for her insinuation.

Fei, not wanting Elly to fight with her parents, goes to leave and tells them that this was now a "land dweller problem". Erich, acknowledging his gratitude for Fei protecting Elly, does not stop him from leaving.

Wandering blindly around Eternank, Fei is unable to understand what any of the civilians are saying. Eventually, he is pulled over by an officer who reveals himself to be Citan in disguise. Citan chides Fei for not being subtle enough. Citan then lays out their plan: to go to the third floor, and then access the dust chute that would allow them to gain access to the palace. When they pass over a scanner, Fei questions Citan why he was able to pass through, and Citan tries to explain it away by his ID still being in the database due to his days in the military by mistake.

When trying to access the Vac-Sys on the third floor, Fei and Citan find they need a card. As they figure out where to go next, Elly rejoins them with the card they need, revealing that her parents had been taken by Solaris officials in order to buy her time to escape. Fei wants to go back to rescue Elly's parents, but Elly insists they continue their mission, since her parents will be kept safe by their military status, and if all else fails, she'll turn herself in once everyone is rescued.

As they delve into the military sectors of Solaris, they come across a storage room with canned food items, which Fei and Elly help themselves to. As they go further into the plant, Citan warns them they're about to learn what was in that canned food, and watches on as they find the conveyer belts loaded with Wel bodies. Fei briefly flashes back to the experiments he received as a child.

Citan reveals this is the Soylent System, which is made up of the organism experiment lab, its disposal facility, and the production facility for food and medicine, which maintains the Limiter seal. It's the source of Wels, and was the facility Erich used to be the superintendent of, before he resigned.

As Citan lets on that he knows more than even Elly does about the inner workings of Solaris, Elly begins to suspect Citan is more than what Fei claims him to be, and challenges him on it. Before Citan answers, the lights go out. Fei tries to find them in the dark, and walks into a room with displays lining the walls and floor. They flash on, and he is stunned unconscious. When he comes to, his body is constrained in a device that halts his ability to move. Fei is bombarded with images as the Gebler Ministry's faces taunt him, along with Citan, who reveals himself to be an agent of Emperor Cain, sent to watch over Fei.

Eventually, Citan walks in and further wears Fei down verbally, until Fei blacks out. Citan then reveals it was a means to bring out the hidden part within Fei, which Citan calls 'Id'.

When Fei and the party come in to help Elly escape from Krelian's laboratory, it is revealed that Citan's betrayal was his means of rescuing the rest of the party, as well as remove their limiters.

Regrouping with Elly's parents, Fei and the rest of the party make their way to the hanger. Just as they arrive, Hammer takes Elly hostage. Medena manages to get Elly free, but is fatally shot in the process.

Grahf and the Executioner teleport in and demand Elly remain with them. After the party battles the two, Erich intervenes in a Solarian Eagle soldier gear. The Executioner, amused by his and Medena's devotion to Elly, forces his gear to malfunction.

In his last moments before his gear explodes, Erich urges Elly to go, telling her to believe in herself, and that he and Medena will support her, because she is their daughter, no matter what. Seeing the death of her father, Elly begins to radiate blue Ether, and the Executioner comments that it is impressive that to have that much Ether control in a "non-awakened state". The Executioner counters with her own release of Ether, overpowering Elly's.

Fei, overwhelmed, transforms into Id and summons a transformed Weltall, destroying all of Solaris.

ID

Id, Fei's powerful persona and alter ego.

Fei eventually learns of this second personality within him named Id, a very powerful entity who is the product of Fei's pain and anguish as a child. For a brief period of time, this power is harnessed due to the help of one of the three sages of Shevat. Called "System Id", this mode utilizes nanotechnology by Fei wearing a restraint that would prevent Id from gaining control.

Sages Taura Melchior and Isaac Balthasar repair Weltall and it becomes Weltall-2.

As the party gains Rico's Anima Relic, they encounter Hammer, now attached directly to his Gear. After he is defeated and falls to his death, Elly feels powerless at being unable to help him. As Fei watches Elly cry, he resolves that he could no longer allow her to fight with them.

Further mutations occur, and the cry of the Wels summon Mahanon. Knowing that this was a battle they may not come back from, Fei goes to Elly, and the two argue. Fei comments that Elly would just be in the way, and Elly cuts the argument short by running off. The party chide Fei for not expressing his true feelings, and encourage him to tell Elly how he feels, before it was too late.

Fei and Elly Love

Fei and Elly.

Fei and Elly meet and reconcile, realizing the full extent of their journey together, how they both had grown, and how much they mean to each other. The two kiss, and make love. In the morning, Elly stays behind and assists Nisan for her own safety.

After defeating a form of Deus, Fei and the group find Razael's Tree. Before they are able to access it, Grahf and Krelian capture them, wanting to use them as bait to lure Elly into their trap.

In Nisan, Elly senses that Fei is in danger, which is confirmed when Karellen sends a message, saying that if she wants to save Fei and his group, she must go to Golgoda. Elly does so and defeats Mugwort and Rattan, but is kidnapped by Karellen. Karellen lets Fei and his allies go, knowing they will come back to rescue her.

In Merkava, the party finds Karellen and Myyah waiting for them, as well as an unconscious Elly, bound on a cross in front of Deus's massive form. Karellan explains that Elly, as the Mother, must be sacrificed in order to revive Deus.

Ramsus then appears, questioning his purpose in life, and is taunted by Myyah and Karellen. Ramsus, realizing he had been used, kills her and Karellen. As she collapses, Myyah remarks that, as someone fated to be unable to kill herself, this was the only way she could die. Meanwhile, due to Karellen's body being mostly composed of nanomachines, he quickly revives.

Xenogears_FMV_-_The_awakening_-_17_25

Xenogears FMV - The awakening - 17 25

Elly awakens as the 'Last Myyah'.

As Fei frees Elly, he is suddenly shot. As Fei slumps back against Citan, it is revealed that Elly shot Fei using Billy's gun. As her hair color, facial expression, and speech change, the party realizes that Elly has turned into the next incarnation of Myyah. After revealing the truth about Deus's nature and its coming plans for humanity, the 'Last Myyah' leaves with Karellen and is reabsorbed into Deus. Fei, in his Gear, tries to follow after Deus's body as it sinks, while the rest of the party is forced to retreat.

The party relocate an unconscious Fei and Weltall-2, and Shevat, fearing Id may resurface, puts Fei into Carbonite Freeze. In a comatose state, Fei cycles through memories of his past selves, including those of Lacan's.

Dan and Midori visit where Fei is imprisoned. Midori comments that Fei is crying, and that he will wake up soon, as something is calling him. Fei manages to plead Midori and Dan to run away before the prison breaks.

Id breaks his body free from the carbonite casing. Taking Weltall, he goes to where the Zohar is. Intercepted by Citan, Bart, and Billy in their Gears, he battles with them. They are joined by Wiseman, who reveals himself to be Khan.

Id mentally locks Fei inside his subconscious, intending to absorb Fei and the Coward into his own personality. Just when Fei was about to lose himself in the darkness in Id, Fei hears Citan shout about his promise to help Elly. Straightening, he encounters the Coward, in front of his repeating projection of his old memories.

Id appears and explains who the Coward is, and shows Fei his memories of Karen's death. Fei, burdened with the responsibility and the reality of what happened, wonders if this is the entire truth of their existence: one side, refusing to see the reality of the past, and the other, bearing the dark truth.

Fei forces the Coward show Id the truth of Karen's death: that Karen did finally come to Fei's aid and shield Fei with her body, protecting him with her life. With the truth of Karen's death fully exposed for both to see, the two personalities gain an understanding, and Fei's personalities became one.[4]

After a final confrontation against Grahf and coming into contact with Zohar in the Land of Bethlehem, Weltall-2 becomes Xenogears.

Eventually Fei's party manages to destroy Merkava, but Deus's completed form emerges from it. After a long battle in Deus's core, Fei's party defeats Deus.

Searching for signs of Elly, the party discovers a slight energy response within the core, which started to strengthen. The Wave Existence was finally freed from its "cage of fleshly existence" from within Zohar. It meant to travel to the higher dimensional it originally came from, which Citan revealed would create enough energy to destroy the planet. Elly, now free of Deus's control and in its body, is trying move it beyond the atmosphere, intending to sacrifice herself one last time.

Final_Boss_Urobolus_-_Xenogears

Final Boss Urobolus - Xenogears

Urobolus.

Fei gives pursuit in the Xenogears, the only Gear left operational after the destruction of the Zohar Modifier, disappearing into the rift.

Inside, Karellen confronts Fei, asking why he is so attached to all the imperfections of human existence that he would prefer it over reverting everything back to when it all began, when all was one in the realm of God.[5] Because humans live in an imperfect state that is filled with sadness, Karellen wants to revert everything to the perfect, unified state of waves, filled with the love of god instead of the false love that humans experience.

I_envy_you_two

Elly in the dimensional rift.

Fei rejects Karellen's ideology with his love for Elly, but Karellen challenges Fei, telling him to prove this love that could make him independent of God, and summons Urobolus, a gigantic serpent-like incarnation bearing Myyah's visage. Xenogears appears, and Fei uses it to defeat Urobolus.

EllyFei1

Elly and Fei return to their planet.

Karellen releases Elly and reveals to Fei that he had planned to become one with God along with Elly. Karellen declines Fei's offer to return and ascends to a higher plane of existence along with the Wave Existence, telling Fei and Elly that he envies them. Fei and Elly then return to their planet along with Xenogears and reunite with the rest of the party.

Gameplay[]

Fei is a balanced fighter with his specialty being martial arts, although his ETH-DEF and ATP are low. Fei has the most powerful combos in the game and decent ATP-up and DFP-up "Chi" spells, along with a few offensive spells.

Fei's bare fist fighting style is based on Bajiquan, where he can utilize powerful punches, elbowing, and some kicks, such as a Double Foot Stomp move and a slow version of somersault kick when using his deathblows. He can use a headbutt to his opponent when using both Ryujin and Koho.

Fei has the most elemental deathblows to his arsenal and can be seen using multiple guided shots as wind damage, a single punch to ground to make a earth damage, drill kicks that are embedded with fire after charging himself with flames, punching blows creating ice as the final blow comes with deadly ice damage, kicking moves that contain lightning damage to make a deadly heel explosion, and lastly, his final deathblow, Yamikei, which is his most powerful and damaging move. When performing Yamikei, Fei switches his fighting style to that of a Zui Quan-style drunken stance, where he summons dark spirits to surround his opponents to make a massive heavy damage.

In Gear battles, Fei's Gear Weltall (and later on, Weltall-2), similarly fights unarmed using punches and kicks to damage to his opponent. He gains System Id in Weltall-2, which puts him into Infinite mode to take three of his powerful abilities in every turn until this mode wears off. The first move is to make a deadly wave of multiple punches and kicks, while the second move goes for a round of multiple kicks, knocking his opponent with a heel drop, and lastly the Kishin, in which Weltall charges to hit his opponent with five powerful blows.

Near the end of the game, after Fei and Id merge into one personality, Xenogears-Id becomes Xenogears. Most of Fei's final gear's moves are used in two or three blows to inflict deadly damage to his opponent. Xenogears's unlimited moves are permanently based on System Id and two of its moves can do two or three powerful blows. This gear's final ability is to charge itself to make multiple punches on its opponent, then to create an aura ball on its hand to make a devastating blow on its downed opponent.

Quotes[]

  • "How long are you just going to stand there like that? If you're going to shoot me, then hurry up and do it. I don't care about my situation... I'm just a guy whose life is worthless... There's no point in me living anyway!"
  • "Look! Look at my hands! Can you hear their voices? Can you understand this feeling? The feeling of having destroyed your village with your own hands...? Of not being able to do anything for the children left behind...? Now they have nothing... I have nothing... I have nowhere... no one... I didn't want to get in it... I had no choice... There was no other way..."
  • "Well I hate it! Whenever I get in a Gear people get hurt. If I fight, people die. I don't want to hurt people! I don't want anyone to die! I hate it... can't you see that?" (to Bart)
  • "Probably deep inside, I'm not really trying to help. Somehow, I get the feeling that all I've done I did because I wanted to be needed. That if I did something for them... then maybe, I'd have a place to belong... There's a side of me that comforts itself like that. That doesn't mean I don't want to help. But, that doesn't mean I really want to help either. It might not be 'nothing', but it sure isn't the 'whole' either. I'd been drifting, led around until I met you, Elly."
  • "Dreaming... I was dreaming... Perhaps it may have been but a long forgotten memory... A dream... A memory... Things remembered when one is asleep... Things forgotten when one is awake... Where the deepest layers of memories become the outmost layers of one's dreams... Which are reality? Which are illusions? One cannot tell until one awakes... Or perhaps they are, at the same time, both truth and fiction... A vast nebulous... With no boundaries... An emptiness equivalent to my own existence... I dreamt such a dream... A long... Never-ending, dream."
  • "That dream changed me... That dream was the catalyst for me to resolve what my purpose was. I think I know now... What I have to do... That long, long memory of a dream... Perhaps it was the memory of my soul..."
  • "I have not lost hope in humans as much as you have, Krelian... Someday humankind will come to understand one another! I sincerely believe that!"
  • "But one being's ego can't determine everyone's fate! People have the right to choose their own destiny! That is why humans have free will!"
  • "Well that's alright too... We don't have to be perfect. Actually, being imperfect makes mankind live by helping each other... That's what being human is... That's mutual understanding! That's 'unity' and 'love'... I'm glad... no, I'm proud... to be human!"
  • "Elly... That isn't wrong. To sacrifice yourself for others is a noble thing... Even if it were to benefit yourself, it's no problem. There will always be a person healed... One or the other... Love gains its original shine only when there's an interrelationship between the giver and the receiver. It is incomplete when one or the other is missing. The two are one. It was you, Elly, who taught me that. I believe that is what it means to be human. I can now understand the true importance of it. I don't know if it's the right answer or not... But we have a lot of time to think about it. What Krelian himself was looking for all along... We will find the answer to it all... ourselves..."
  • "That's not true! I know they would understand! There's still plenty of time to atone for your sins! You of all people can do it!"

Trivia[]

  • Fei is based on the legendary Chinese hero Wong Fei-hung of Guangdong, China. His name in katakana is written exactly the same as the Chinese hero. Because of this, his name can also be written as "Wong Fei Fong".
  • Fei shares many similarities with Noah from Xenoblade Chronicles 3, from his ponytail, parts of his personality, certain themes of his past, and his ties to others.
  • In Xenoblade Chronicles 3, there is a statue of a founder that looks similar to Fei, who is remarked to be a "master of the classical art of fist fighting".
  • Fei's (as well as Elly's and Citan's) monologues during the second disk of Xenogears are referenced in Hi-Fi Rush, where the main character is sitting on a green couch instead of a green chair, and the swinging Nisan cross is replaced with a similarly swinging iPod. Still images depicting events, a major battle being skipped past, and characters speaking under a spotlight are also used, for humorous effect.

  5. KRELIAN: How can you be so sure? Humans will never come to understand each other. You said that she is the person you love. But can you say that you even truly understand each other? All humans do is place themselves at a comfortable distance from each other and call that 'mutual understanding', 'spiritual unity', or 'true love'... but it is all lies! Man cannot associate with others without first deceiving themselves. That is the way that they were created. FEI: But one being's ego can't determine everyone's fate! People have the right to choose their own destiny! That is why humans have free will! KRELIAN: And what if that 'will' itself was predetermined? What then? Oh, what folly!? Humans are just primitive life forms that have no such things as free will... Mankind has merely been allowed to live in an imperfect state... "as is", "as will be"... It is for this very reason... because humans have this wretched 'will' or whatnot... that humans must experience sadness and loss. For someone to gain something means another must lose it... It is impossible to make humankind share limited "things" and "affections"... So I came to the conclusion that everything must be reverted back to where it all began. To go back to when all was one... waves, and nothing else... It is not my -Human's- ego... It is the will of the 'Waves'... the will of -god-...
