That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... Take it back!
—Id attacking the Yggdrasil in his red Gear

Id (イド, Ido) is a character and antagonist in Xenogears. He is a powerful, destructive being that antagonizes the party multiple times.

Id possesses a relentless drive to destroy, and like many characters, he is tied to Fei Fong Wong's forgotten past.

Appearance[]

Id's skin is a ghostly white, and hair is a deep red crimson, and is unkempt and long, hanging down to his mid-back. Similarly, his arched eyebrows are thick, bright yellow eyes.

His body is covered in what looks like a skin-tight black full body suit, with pieces of red armor edged in yellow.

Personality[]

My purpose is the same as his... total destruction! That and that alone!
—Id, to Khan

The seeds of Id's arrival were sown in response to the physical and mental trauma that Fei Fong Wong suffered when he was a young child, the lack of parental love, and how he was unable to look to anyone to help him.

This changed the day Fei's mother, Karen Wong, died. Due to the trauma of witnessing her death and feeling responsible for it, Fei's original personality completely split into two personas: The Coward, the first personality who clung to positive memories of his past as well as memory of his mother's smile in her final moments, and Id, who was left with what remained.

Thrust onto the stage of Fei's consciousness after Karen's death, Id was left with the responsibility for his mother's death, and no context for why and how his mother died, or the positive memories of his childhood before. This led to Id hating the world and wishing to destroy everything, in order to spread his hatred. [1]

When Khan finds Id again and seals him away, this led to the artificial personality of Fei, who is the newest, and has no memories from before arriving in Lahan.

Powers[]

Id's power is a manifestation of Fei's status as the Contact and a glimpse of what Fei could be if he awakened fully. Due to how Id was formed, he is unique among previous incarnations of the Contact, being at the same time fully awakened, and yet not. This gives him near-infinite control over the forces of reality, Ether. His ability is so great that it is physically impossible to measure the Ether response of him or his Gear, much like Grahf or a fully awakened Antitype.

Predictably, Id uses these powers destructively. He can create black holes, fire energy waves, or enhance his body to superhuman levels able to contend with any foe in close quarters. He also possesses telekinesis, able to, while piloting his Gear, lift an entire ship up and hurl it. He can also fly, and in one occasion, teleport.

As a boss character and during Kahram Ramsus's nightmare, Id is able to throw a disc on his opponent. He is also seen using Fei's fighting style as his deathblows, which he uses to defeat opponents or even destroy Gears, despite using his bare fists.

Biography[]

FeiTorture

Myyah, as Karen, experimenting on Fei as a child.

Fourteen years ago, when Fei was around four years old, his mother, Karen Wong, awakened as the next incarnation of Myyah Hawwa, sealing away her original personality. When Myyah suspected Fei of being a new incarnation of the Contact, she conducted horrific experiments known as spiritual fusion on Fei. She took him to testing labs and brought in various humans and demi-humans who had a high compatibility with the Anima Relics. She would have them attempt to make psychic contact with Fei to forcefully awaken him,[2] but they were all killed and Fei felt spiritual agony. Even when Fei's father, Khan Wong, became aware of his wife's changes and the experiments on his son, he did not intervene, instead continuing in his work. This continual trauma and the lack of love planted the seeds for Id in the form of a second 'substitute' personality, designed to take on the negative memories and pain so that the original personality could hide until the pain had passed.[3]

Karen's Sacrifice

Karen's death.

Things came to a head in 9985 when Karen summoned Grahf, who wanted to merge with Fei.[4] Khan attempted to stop him and was heavily wounded. As this happened, Fei looked up at his mother, wanting her to help, but instead found her impassive face. At the sight of this, Fei was unable to contain his powers as the Contact, and released a beam of light that arced back towards him. Just before the beam could hit Fei, Karen's original self resurfaced, and she used her body as a shield, protecting her son from the blast.[4] Managing a final smile down at her son, Karen then collapsed over him, succumbing to her injuries.

After his mother's death, Id is born.

The original personality escaped deep into Fei's psyche, separating from the substitute entirely, leaving behind the memory of his mother dying, as well as the responsibility for killing her, while taking the truth: that his mother had come back, in order to sacrifice her life for her child. Id, now in control in the original's absence, was then taken away by Grahf, who trained him as an assassin for ten years. He resented having to shoulder all the original personality's trauma, and instead used his training, as well as his newfound powers, to spread out hatred.[3]

In 9993, Grahf turned Id loose on Elru, annihilating it, as well as destroying the Solaris army. Kahran Ramsus was severely injured by Id, an event Ramsus still had nightmares of years later.

Khan speaking to Grahf and Id.

He has sealed away the very meaning of my existence... my drive... my motivation... my subconscious -Id-. Because of that, I became a basic, blank persona. And on top of that, I constructed a new persona based on my experiences since then... That is what you are now!
—Id, talking to 'Fei'

In 9996, Khan located Grahf again, and battled him in order to take his son back, only to be possessed by Grahf himself. Khan, disguised as Wiseman, dropped off Fei in Lahan Village, with Id was sealed in deep dormancy in Fei's subconscious. Due to no personality being at the forefront of Fei, a third, 'artificial' personality was developed, who had no memory of his life prior to being fifteen years old. Because of this, Fei had no knowledge of Khan and Grahf being one and the same.

Xenogears - Destruction of Lahan Village

Id reemerges in Fei when Timothy dies.

Three years after Fei's arrival, Lahan Village was attacked by gears from Gebler and Kislev due to Grahf orchestrating a mission. When Timothy, Fei's best friend, is killed, Fei awakens as Id once again after years of peace and destroys the village killing several people, including Alice. After this, Id would resurface from time to time, often when Fei realized his own powerlessness,[3] like when Vanderkam started annihilating his associates after receiving "The Power" from Grahf.

Whenever Id surfaced, Fei's Gear Weltall transformed into Weltall-Id, a blood-red Gear of incredible power with six glowing wings made of energy. But even without his Gear, Id is monstrously powerful and fully capable of destroying Gears bare-handed.

Citan, Elly and Bart fight Id in the Zeboim Ruins.

While exploring the Zeboim Ruins, Id demands Emeralda from Isaac Stone for unknown reasons. He proceeds to fight the group. After losing, Wiseman attempts to stop Id, and the scene ends on a cliffhanger.

After Fei witnesses the Executioner torturing his friends, Id awakens in Fei and completely destroys Solaris in Weltall-Id, causing the floating civilization to explode and sink into the ocean. After Ramsus attacked Fei and Elly, Taura Melchior gave Fei a bracelet to control Id.

Id is given peace near the end of the game during The Land of Bethlehem scenes, when he merges with the other personalities after learning what memories the "coward" personality had. This act allows Fei to meet the Wave Existence and obtain Xenogears.

Etymology[]

Id is named after one of the three forms of the subconscious mind in psychoanalytic theory. It is present at birth, and responsible for the mind's instinctual drives and bodily needs and wants.

Quotes[]

  • "Heh... You. You've come to die, eh?"
  • "The one you call Fei is asleep. When I awake, he sleeps. That is why he has no memory of what I do."
  • "Fei is my subordinate. He cannot peer into my memories. He should not, in actuality, even exist. That man forcibly created his personality. Fei is a tenant in the room of cowardice..."
  • "Our father, Khan. He sealed up my personality in the deepest recesses of my consciousness."
  • "A coward like him does not deserve to be 'Fei's existence'. A pathetic one who has always fled from reality. He never did one thing against me when I control him. A coward who refuses to live. He should've been erased. But he continues to exist! Why won't he disappear? Dammit... it makes my skin crawl just being in the same body as him."
  • "You call him father? He who never did anything for you? It was because of his cowardly behavior... If only he had been able to protect me... If he had done that... mother wouldn't have died..."
  • "My power... couldn't save anyone. It only destroyed. I thought that I could only make a connection with others through destruction. So I had to destroy it all. People... The world... Even Elly..."
  • "Mother being so warm... To me... She always seemed... too warm... Fei. Take the memories I have within me. You must know what it used to be like up until now. Know our identity... about who we are. Then figure out what ought to be done. Our integration is not yet complete."
