Karen Wong (カレン, karen) is the mother of Fei Fong Wong and wife of Khan Wong in Xenogears. She died fourteen years prior to the events of the game, when Fei was only four years old.

Biography[]

Karen was the Nisan Orthodox postulant, originally from the Aquvy parish. Due to an unexplained incident involving a heretical treatise, she came into the circle of Shevat's military commander, Khan Wong.[1] The two married, and a year later, Karen gave birth to Fei in Shevat. They then joined Khan down on the surface.[2]

When Fei was little, Karen used to play with him by bouncing a ball back and forth, which would later become a memory Fei's original personality would play repeatedly in his mind, as he retreated deeper into his psyche.

When Fei was around four years old, Myyah Hawwa awakened in Karen after her previous host body passed away from old age, sealing Karen's personality away. Upon discovering that Fei was the current incarnation of the Contact, Myyah used her new position to conduct "spiritual fusion" experiments on Fei in order to forcefully awaken him whenever Khan went out to work. Taking him to testing labs, Myyah brought in humans and demi-humans who had a high compatibility with the Anima Relics and had them attempt to make psychic contact with Fei, but they all ended up dying in the process. This process caused much psychological damage on Fei's psyche, eventually resulting in the inadvertent creation of Id.

Fei attempted to tell his father about Karen's strange behavior, but Khan simply dismissed it, even continuing in his own work as he began to realize Karen's change in personality, as well as the experiments.[3] It was during this incarnation of Myyah that she alerted Karellen of the new Contact's existence. They created an artificial Contact and clone of Emperor Cain named Ramsus, but since the original Contact had been found, they decided to abandon Ramsus when he was ten years old.

Ten months after Myyah awakened in Karen, she summoned Grahf, who wanted to merge with Fei.[4] Khan attempted to stop him and was heavily wounded. As this happened, Fei looked up at his mother, wanting her to help, but instead found her impassive face. At the sight of this, Fei was unable to contain his powers as the Contact, and released a beam of light that arced back towards him. Just before the beam could hit Fei, Karen's original self resurfaced, and she used her body as a shield, protecting her son from the blast. Managing a final smile down at her son, Karen then collapsed over him, succumbing to her injuries. Myyah's new host body was a second class citizen at Jugend Military Academy whom Ramsus met.

Karen's pendant, which was the Pendant of Nisan, was given to Fei, and Fei subsequently gave it to Elly Van Houten, the reincarnation of Sophia. After Fei's amnesiac third personality was created by Khan after Grahf merged with him, Fei believed that Karen died soon after he was born.

Etymology[]

The name "Karen" is a shortened form of the name 'Katherine'. Both names reference the Greek word καθαρός, meaning "pure".[5]
