This is... Deus!?
—Fei Fong Wong
XenoDeus

Deus 1st stage located in Mahanon.

Deus is an antagonist in Xenogears. It is technically the penultimate final boss, but since the boss after Deus is extremely easy, Deus is considered the final boss from a gameplay difficulty perspective.

Deus is a hybrid between a biological base and a computer machine. Its physical aspect is part of the Yabeh interplanetary invasion system, along with the Zohar Modifier.

Origin[]

This Deus, the one you call god, is an 'interplanetary invasion system' that was built in ancient times by humans from another planet. It was created as an automatic weapon which could act upon its own will to take control of a targeted planet.
Myyah Hawwa

Deus was completed in T.C. 4766, using Kadomony and the Zohar.[1]

In 4767, on Miktam04β, a series of top-secret tests were conducted between Deus and the Zohar, which was now Deus's primary power source. During one of these tests, a young boy named Abel made 'contact' with the Wave Existence, a hyper dimensional being that had become bound to the Zohar.[2]

Through the Zohar, the energy of the Wave Existence flowed into Abel, who became the Contact.[3] Responding to the young boy's wish, the biological computer Kadomony created a woman, which the Wave Existence imbued with a mother's will: the original Elehayym.[2]

At some point after this, Deus went out of control and invaded the nearby colony on the planet Miktam04β, resulting in innumerable causalities.

After the military intervened and managed to place Deus in suspended animation at the cost of many more lives, Deus was dismantled into several parts and sealed. The Eldridge was requisitioned for the use of transporting Deus's separated cores as well as the survivors, which included Abel, to another planet for investigation as to what caused the incident on Miktam04β.[4][5]

Eldridge takeover[]

Deus hacks into the Eldridge before its crash.

While near an unnamed planet, Deus managed to activate itself, and used the sealed Zohar to hack into the ship's mainframe. Seeing this, Eldridge captain Shigeyoshi Inoue and a trio of system operators began a plan to use the Eldridge's systems to stop Deus.[6]

Deus began to draw the Eldridge into space displacement mode and set the coordinates for Lost Jerusalem, alarming the captain's crew. After the captain's call to the engine room to start the emergency sealing system went unanswered, the screens of the control room filled with the words 'You shall be as gods'. Captain Inoue immediately ordered his crew to begin evacuating the ship's passengers.

The crew's evacuation efforts failed as Deus used the Eldridge's weaponry to destroy the escape shuttles in mid-flight. Before Deus assumed complete control over the vessel, the captain initiated the ship's self-destruct system as a last effort, and the Eldridge exploded over an uncharted life-sustaining planet, scattering the parts of Deus, as well as the ship itself.

In the end, there was only one survivor of the Eldridge: Abel.

Revival[]

Mother

The mother of humanity arises naked from the wreckage of the Eldridge.

MyyahGod

Myyah's final incarnation reveals the truth about Deus.

At some point before the Eldridge crashed into the planet due to Deus's awakening, Kadomony activated a program called System Hawwa. Using Elehayym, System Hawwa transformed her into her dark-haired counterpart, Myyah, who would serve as the mother of humanity.[7]

After the Eldridge's crash, the mother of humanity rose from the wreckage of the Eldridge and went on to create a biological assembler plant. She created the first human beings Cain and the twelve members of the Gazel Ministry, using the original parts of Animus. Cain, as the first human, was to be a manager of the Gazel Ministry in their search for the Anima Relics, which were scattered across the planet. They would go on to mass-produce more humans using Kadomony.

In order to manage and guide these new humans, the Mother of Humanity created two copies of herself: Elly, the Antitype, and the first human incarnation Myyah, the Complement.[8]

Elehayym retained many of the characteristics Abel wished for in a mother, the 'Mother's Will'[9]. She would be reborn again and again as the Contact did, always bearing red hair and blue-violet eyes.

The Complement version of Myyah, meanwhile, was meant as a manager, bearing the powers of a Deus System weapon and tasked to strengthen and gather all the genetic parts the Deus System Mode needed to repair and reactivate its new body.[10] Instead of being reborn each time she died like Elhayym, she would awaken in another woman's body to resume her mission.

The two women would not remain separated forever, as Elehayym was programmed to awaken as the last incarnation of Myyah, and merge with Deus on the Day of Resurrection.[11]

Xenogears - Deus

Killing Deus, one form at a time.

After Mahanon is raised, the party fights its first form inside it.

Later, Deus is transferred to the Merkava and it appears as a dome with eyes, but it isn't actually fought as a boss.

The Merkava breaks as Deus awakens.

After the Merkava is raised, Deus terraforms with the planet. Inside, it is supported by four pillars, which are essentially mini-bosses. Defeating each mini-boss weakens Deus. If the player skips the mini-bosses and directly attacks Deus, Deus is a harder boss.

  • Defeating "Metatron" will seal Deus' "Earthly Anointment" AOE attack. Metatron is an angel referred to in several Abrahamic religious texts.
  • Defeating "Sundel" will seal Deus' healing (4,000 HP). Sundel is a reference to Sandalphon, an archangel in referred to in several Abrahamic religious texts.
  • Defeating "Marlute" will seal Deus' "Fuel Drain" attack. Marlute is a reference to Marut, one of two angels mentioned in the Quran.
  • Defeating "Harlute" will seal Deus' "Heavenly Anointment" AOE attack. Harlute is a reference to Harut, the other angel mentioned in the Quran.

If the player defeats all four orbs, Deus has 40,000 HP. If not, it has 75,000 HP and it will use its full arsenal of attacks.

After defeating Deus, Urobolus is next.

Stages and evolution[]

  • Omega 1: Appears in the beginning of the game, preserved in a reactor. Its size is approximately 20-30 meters. In this state, Deus is already capable of destroying a planet.
  • Stage 1: After the Eldridge crashed on the new planet, Deus sank to the ocean floor and its body grows for 9999 years. It is described as having a massive alien form that is partially rotting.
  • Stage 2: After the transport system of Deus, Merkava, is destroyed, it evolves to something which resembles a green shell dome with blue indigo eyes. Its true body is hidden inside this vortex-shaped shell.
  • Stage 3: In order to expand its body further, Deus begins terraforming to merge with the planet. The evolved grown body of Deus in the interior is its true form.

Etymology[]

"Deus" means "god" in Latin.

Originally "Yahweh" was the name for Deus, as explained by Richard Honeywood. The translation staff were concerned that the name could upset fundamental Christians and other religious groups, with one being worried of retaliation against their US office.

While trying to convince the Japanese staff that the name would go over poorly with a Western audience, Honeywood said ヤベーよ (yabē yo), roughly meaning "It's dangerous/bad." Noticing the similarity between Yahweh and yabē, the development team broke out in laughter. According to Honeywood, they then decided to call the boss yabē in Japanese.[12] However, it is called デウス (deusu) in the final Japanese release game as well as Perfect Works, so either Honeywood's account is inaccurate or they changed the name again at a later point. The term Yabeh does appear once in the English script, in the scene where Fei's party enters Razael's Tree. Since it is consistently localized as Deus everywhere else in the script, this single usage of Yabeh is probably a mistake.

Trivia[]

DeusDescend

Gears descending into the core of Deus.

  • Deus, along with Urobolus, is based on the concept of the Demiurge.[citation needed]
  • While descending into Deus' core, a one-winged male and one-winged female figure are seen holding hands - they are dependent on each other in order to fly. As seen in the Nisan cathedral, this relates to Marguerite Fatima's story which she claims is "a legend handed down in Nisan."
  • The bodies of Gazel Ministry were once part of the organic elements in the core circuit that made up Deus. There were two types of organic elements. The female type was called 'Anima', while the male type was called 'Animus'. They were also created with the added ability to become mobile weapons for Deus.
ArkCore

The core of Abel's Ark.

Omega_Metempsychosis

Omega Metempsychosis

E.S. gameplay of Ω Metempsychosis

  • Also in Episode III and also seen in Abel's Ark, Ω Metempsychosis is also probably a Deus reference. Where Deus sported two tiny angels, Omega Metempsychosis is accompanied by two lookalikes resembling Fei's Gear Weltall and Elly's Gear Vierge.
  • The general premise and presentation of Deus strongly resembles that of the main antagonist of Chrono Trigger. This likely stems from the fact that not only did many of the developers who worked on Chrono Trigger go on to work on Xenogears (most notably Masato Kato, the main writer of story) but also because Xenogears was also pitched as a potential sequel to the SNES game in addition to its original Final Fantasy VII pitch.[citation needed]
  • The concept of gods and their relationship with humanity, as well as the nature of divinity itself, is continually explored in later Xeno series.
