Nothing at all. It’s as if even the atoms are at rest.
—Shelley to Jr., about the disappearance of Ariadne

Shelley Godwin (シェリィ・ゴドウィン, Sheryi Godō~in) is the elder sister of Mary Godwin, and the navigator and helmsman of the Durandal. Along with her sister, Shelley is often seen with Gaignun Kukai and Jr. She is idolized by many people of the Kukai Foundation through the "Mary & Shelley Fan Club" as well. Shelley is a genius and is capable of performing and excelling in many complicated tasks while navigating the Durandal through the far reaches of space.

Background[]

Shelley is able to communicate telepathically with Mary via "interlink" which is defined as "An exchange of thought between two individuals who are physically connected via an apparatus, normally achieved by tapping into the U.M.N. network via a control device implanted inside the body." She and Mary consider themselves sisters, and are both Designer Children and survivors of the Life Recycling Act.

She and Mary were once part of a group of people who were illegally "owned" by a pharmaceutical company that used them as guinea pigs, and kept them heavily drugged.

Twelve years ago, Gaignun[1] saved Shelley and Mary and they made the Foundation their new home. Shelley became Gaignun's secretary and a pilot of the Durandal. Helmer considers her and Mary to be his daughters.

Personality[]

Although Shelley does not show much emotion throughout the game, it is evident that she is kind and caring.

Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht[]

Shelley works alongside Jr., Mary, and the 100-Series Realians to investigate the disappearance of Ariadne.

Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Böse[]

Shelley is present during MOMO Mizrahi's analysis on Second Miltia.

Xenosaga Episode III: Also sprach Zarathustra[]

Shelley and Mary are attacked by Dmitri Yuriev and the Salvator Faction forces during the occupation of the Durandal. Depending on who is rescued first by the player, they will each ask Jr. to save the other.

At the end, Shelley is one of those who embarks on a mission to find Lost Jerusalem, the lost homeland of humanity.

Trivia[]

  • According to Xenosaga: Official Design Materials, Shelley is classified as an Enneagram type 6, along with Allen Ridgeley, Jin Uzuki, Lapis Roman, Mary Godwin, and Pellegri.
  • Her name, along with Mary's, comes from Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. "Godwin" was Mary Shelley's maiden name.
  • Shelly's name appears in the playable characters list in the hidden Battle Debug menu of Episode I. While she does not appear playable in the final product, her playable slot was repurposed for the random soldier that joins Jr. and Mary on the U-TIC Battleship.

References[]

  1. The English XSI database states, "Twelve years ago, Gaignun rescued her along with Mary, and she has made her home in the Foundation ever since." The Japanese XSI database states, "十二年前、メリィと共にガイナン達に保護されて以来、ファウンデーションにその身を置いている。" Of note, ガイナン達 (Gainan-tachi) can be translated as "Gaignun and the others" and may refer to Gaignun and the Kukai Foundation's team generally. Similar usage translates Shion-tachi as "Shion and the others" when referring to the actions of the playable party members, such as within story synopses in the XSIII database.
